LAHORE: Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) leader Aitzaz Ahsan, on Wednesday, presented a resolution in the Senate, stating that any person who is ineligible to be a member of the National Assembly (NA) cannot hold the office of any political party.
Last month, the NA and Senate passed the Election Reforms Bill 2017 which paved the way for ousted Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to become the party head since it allowed people to be office bearers in political parties even if they are ineligible to contest elections.
The resolution further states that the Parliament is exposed to becoming hostage to a person who himself is barred from entering it.
The Leader of the House, Senator Raja Zafarul Haq opposed the resolution by saying that the matter has already been addressed in the bill.
Law Minister Zahid Hamid said, “Every person should have the right to choose whoever they want as their leader”.
The resolution was passed by the majority of the senators.
